The AAIB was Established by an Act of Legislature in 2019 and first appointment of Commissioner and Executive Director/Principal Deputy in 2024 by H.E. President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. The AAIB is mandated to investigate civil aviation accidents and incidents in Liberia. Operates independently and autonomous to ensure impartiality and objectivity.
AAIB Act of 2019 outlines the functions, powers, and structure ; Conforms with ICAO Annex 13 Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and ICAO guidance and implementation provisions for aircraft accident, serious incident and incident investigation. Under the legal framework we are connected to Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA).
Investigate all aircraft accidents, serious incidents, and incidents occurring in Liberia’s territory and outside Liberia by Liberian registered aircraft in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13 and our Aircraft Accident Investigation Policy and Procedure Manual(iPPM). Determine probable causes and contributing factors without apportioning blame or liability. Support a culture of safety and issue safety recommendations to prevent reoccurrence and improve civil aviation safety globally; Collaborate with national, regional, and international bodies in aviation safety; Maintain a database of occurrences and safety recommendations; Support a culture of safety across the aviation industry by information sharing with stakeholders globally; Keep the families of accident victims updated on the progress of our investigation
